What is an Indoor Pool?

An indoor pool is just what it sounds like – it's a swimming pool that’s found inside a commercial building or a home. You can find swimming pools in many places like private homes, gyms, hotels, and community centers, along with others. What sets them apart is that they are totally enclosed, often heated or climate-controlled, and protected from the outside weather.

Indoor pools are very popular in areas with colder weather or long winters. They let folks enjoy swimming no matter what the season. They’re often found in luxurious homes, high-end buildings, wellness centers and etc. where comfort and privacy really matter.

But while they sound great, indoor pools also come with their own set of challenges like moisture buildup, higher maintenance costs, and space usage. And for some folks in Virginia, the indoor pool that once felt like a luxury can turn into a burden – and that’s where we come in.

Why People in Virginia Decide to Remove Their Indoor Swimming Pools

In Virginia, more and more people are deciding to get rid of their indoor pools - and for good reason. While they may seem like a luxury at first, indoor pools can take up a ton of usable space, rack up big maintenance bills, and eventually just go unused. And let’s face it - folks are always thinking of new ideas for their homes.

Here’s why many choose to remove their indoor pools:

  • No longer used
  • High maintenance and repair costs
  • Energy bills are too expensive
  • Humidity and moisture damage
  • Want to use the space for something else (gym, living space, etc.)
  • Improving home resale value
  • Kids have grown up or moved out
  • Health or safety concerns

What You Need To Know About Indoor Inground & Above Ground Pools

Whether your indoor swimming pool is inground or above ground, we can handle it. For inground pools, we offer two options:

Full Removal - This means removing the entire structure: pool shell, walls, floor, decking, and plumbing. It's the most complete solution, perfect if you want to build something new in the same spot. (Read more about our Full Removal Option)

Partial Removal (Pool Fill-In) – We remove the top section of the pool, punch holes in the bottom for drainage, and fill it with soil and gravel. It's faster and cheaper, but limits future building on the area. (Read more about our Partial Removal Option - a.k.a Pool Fill-In)

There's no other option to remove an Above Ground Pool – We need to tear down the entire structure, haul away the debris, clean the area, then level and grade it. Currently, we haven’t encountered any indoor above ground pools, but we’re always ready if one comes up!

Indoor Pool Demolition Process

Removing an indoor pool is pretty much the same process as taking out an outdoor one. The main difference is that we have to be extra careful because it's inside an enclosed space. Indoor swimming pools are usually inside homes, hotels, schools or other buildings - which means there are walls, floors, ventilation systems, and other nearby structures that we don’t want to damage during the removal.

Our pool demolition process starts with a free consultation where we check out your pool and talk about what you want to do. After that, we handle all the permits and paperwork. Then we drain the pool and disconnect the utilities to make sure everything is safe. Once that’s done, we begin the demolition, either fully removing the pool or just taking out part of it, depending on what you choose. We clean up all the mess, then fill the empty space with dirt and gravel, and pack it down tight. Finally, we level the area, clean it up one last time, and make sure everything is ready for whatever you plan to do next.

Indoor Pool Removal Cost (Inground or Above Ground)

Indoor pool removal costs vary based on several factors, and we always base our estimates on real jobs we’ve completed in Virginia.

For example, we once removed a concrete inground pool inside a commercial building with a spa/jacuzzi feature. Accessibility was tough, so we had to demolish part of the front wall to bring in equipment. That job ran between $20,000 to $35,000, including all repair work after demolition.

Another project was a fiberglass indoor pool inside a residential house. That removal was more easy but still required extra caution due to limited access and interior finishes. That project cost between $13,000 to $20,000.

Another project was a fiberglass indoor pool inside a residential house. That removal was more easy but still required extra caution due to limited access and interior finishes. That project cost between $13,000 to $20,000.

Each project is unique, and several things can affect the final cost:

  • Location & access to the pool
  • Pool type and materials
  • Whether it’s full or partial removal
  • Local permit costs
  • Utility disconnections
  • Water pumping
  • Repairs or rebuilding
  • Waste disposal and hauling

So far, we haven’t run into any indoor above ground pools, but if that day comes, we’ll be ready!
